Basic Rules & Standards
- 1Eleven players per side on the field
- 2Offense has four downs to advance the ball 10 yards
- 3A touchdown is scored when the ball crosses the goal line
- 4Forward pass allowed once per down from behind the line of scrimmage
- 5Penalties move the ball forward or backward by set yardage
- 6Possession changes on turnovers, downs, or scoring
- 7Game clock stops on incompletions, out-of-bounds, and timeouts
What PitchView AI detects in an American football game
- Touchdowns — every touchdown, with how it was scored (rush, pass, return or defensive), the scoring player where visible, the play type and approximate yardage.
- Field goals — made or missed, with a distance band (short, mid or long) when it can be read from the footage.
- Extra points and two-point conversions — PATs made or missed, and the result of two-point attempts.
- Turnovers — interceptions and fumbles, including which team recovered.
- Sacks — quarterback sacks, with the defender where visible.
- Penalties — significant penalties that change down and distance or wipe out a play.
- Punts and returns — punts, muffed kicks and kick or punt return touchdowns.
- Big plays — explosive rushes or passes of 20+ yards that didn't already end in a touchdown.
Replays, commentary and crowd shots are ignored, and each play is logged only on its first occurrence — so a touchdown shown three times is counted once.
How it works
- 1
Add your footage
upload a video file (up to 500 MB: MP4, AVI, MOV, MKV or WebM), paste a direct video URL or a YouTube link. For YouTube you can choose the download quality; the recommended one is pre-selected.
- 2
Choose the sport
pick it from the list, or let PitchView auto-detect it from a YouTube link. You confirm the sport before the analysis starts, and can pick the two teams from your Teams list so events are attributed to them.
- 3
Standard, parallel or live
standard analysis processes the whole video in one pass, ideal for highlights and short clips. Parallel analysis splits long footage into short overlapping segments and analyses several at once, with events appearing as each segment finishes. Stream analysis works on a match while it's being broadcast live.
- 4
Review and export
events appear on an interactive timeline; click any one to jump to that moment. Mark events as correct, wrong or duplicate, edit them, add your own, re-run the analysis with a custom prompt, and export the results.

Getting the best results
- An elevated sideline or end-zone view that keeps the line of scrimmage and the ball carrier in frame gives the clearest read of each play.
- All-22 or wide coaches' film works well for full-game breakdowns; broadcast footage works too.
- Full games: use parallel analysis — it handles long footage much faster than a single pass.
- Pick both teams from your Teams list first so scores, turnovers and penalties are attributed correctly.
Who uses it
High-school and college coaching staffs building game reviews, coordinators studying an opponent's tendencies, recruiters cutting highlight reels, and content teams turning full games into scoring-play timelines.
Frequently asked questions
Does it distinguish rushing from passing touchdowns?
Yes. Each touchdown records the method — rush, pass, return or defensive.
Will a replayed touchdown be counted twice?
No. Replays are ignored and each play is logged once.
Does it log every penalty flag?
It logs significant penalties — ones that change down and distance or negate a play.
Does it chart formations or player routes?
No. PitchView detects and timestamps game events; it doesn't chart formations, routes or player tracking.
